CLAY BODIES
(THE SKIN OF EARTH)
Art With Me Tulum
2020
—
A sculptural photographic series exploring an intimate communion with clay. It begins with a playful ritual of covering the body in clay. This childlike experience is then captured through photography. A process of revealing the nakedness of self, submerging, rejoicing and surrendering into the textures of earth. When the clay mask is applied to the entire body a transformation occurs. The identity is lost and the person becomes a symbol of the human form, a statue of self - a timeless infinite being. The ritual finishes with a rebirth of washing away the clay into a fresh awakened self.
The process of bringing these images to life is one of collaboration and exploration with the artisans from the Local Yucatan area, ceramic artist Jose Juarez and textile artist Beta Astral. Blending a variety of traditional Mexican weaving techniques and explorative digital printing on ceramics and textiles, each piece merges ancient & future processes into a harmonized dialogue.
These documented experiences are manifested into tactile relics. The first set of 3 images are printed on unique and handmade clay panels, created by Jose Juarez, who also participated as the subject for some of the images. The next set is printed on canvas and handwoven cotton. Using natural fibers and traditional Mexican weaving techniques these fabric prints are created into textile hanging sculptures. Goldflower has spent a significant time In this region, which has inspired a multifaceted cultural and artistic dialogue.
